LIVING IN KARRATHA

Karratha is the major financial and business centre of the Pilbara and boasts all the amenities of a city, only smaller, much smaller. There are numerous restaurants, churches, a cinema and theatre, art galleries, swimming pools, cafes, art groups and community activities to enjoy.

With a small population of about 10,500 people, socialising with neighbours and friends is a way of life in Karratha and it is not a difficult place to meet people.

The weather is warm and pleasant all year around, encouraging an outdoor lifestyle, which is complimented by beautiful beaches and stunning natural surrounds. Boat ownership in Karratha is possibly the highest in Australia. Fishing, swimming, picnicking and boating among the islands of the Dampier Archipelago are some of the area's most popular recreational activities.

Many families take advantage of the near-by Karijini and Millstream-Chichester national parks for a day trip or camping adventure. The spectacular rock formations and lush oasis make for a beautiful escape from the town. Some remote areas are accessible only by 4WD.

If you feel you need to get further afield, Qantas and Sky West airlines have regular flights to Perth, Darwin, Broome and Exmouth. Coach services provide transport to most surrounding areas.

WHAT THE LOCALS SAY
"Between October and April, the temperature throughout the Pilbara reaches or exceeds 32 degrees celsius almost every day. During the winter months the average temperature falls to a very pleasant 25 degrees celsius."
