DRIVING
The Pilbara region is huge (500,000 square kilometres), so if you are planning a driving trip, especially off road, the following equipment is recommended as a minimum - a detailed map of the area, jack, spare tyres, extra fan belt, radiator hoses, and a tow rope. Make sure you plan ahead for fuel stops and always carry plenty of water - 20 litres minimum.
Torrential rains in summer months can unexpectedly cut or flood roads, so it is advisable to contact the closest tourist bureau or police station for road conditions. The speed limit in Western Australia is 110 km per hour, including the Pilbara Highway.
Warning! Whether you are travelling off the beaten track or for any great distance, before you leave you should always tell someone: your route, the number of passengers, and your estimated time of arrival. This sounds dramatic, but the Pilbara is dramatic and this simple precaution could save lives.
