DRIVING

If you are relocating permanently in to live in Victoria, you will need to apply for a Victorian drivers licence within 3 months of arrival. Temporary visitors may drive on a recognised international license for the duration of their stay, so long as the licence is in English, or you have an official translation.

Some international drivers will need to pass a written test of road laws and a practical driving test. In other cases you can transfer your license without a test.

To apply, visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre with your current drivers licence and another form of identification that provides proof of your signature, your age and your residential address in Victoria.

If your foreign drivers licence is in a language other than English, you will need an authorised translation, which can be a consulate translation on official letterhead signed by the Consul-General and stamped with the official consulate stamp.

Throughout Australia, vehicles drive on the left of the road, seatbelts must be worn at all times and drivers must carry their licence. For specific information on road rules in Victoria, please refer to the VicRoads website.

WHAT THE LOCALS SAY
"Keep an eye on the varying speed limits. 40km/hour in school zones and heavy shopping areas. 50km/hour in built up areas. Then some roads are 60km/hour, some are 70km/hour ranging up to 100km/hour. It can get confusing."
