DRIVING
If you are relocating to live permanently in Hobart, you will need to apply for a Tasmanian drivers licence within 3 months of arrival.
To apply, visit a Registration and Licensing Branch with your current drivers licence and another form of identification that provides proof of your signature, your age and your residential address in Hobart.
All international drivers, except New Zealanders, will need to pass a written test of road laws and in some cases also a practical driving test.
If your foreign drivers licence is in a language other than English, you will need an authorised translation, which can be a consulate translation on official letterhead signed by the Consul-General and stamped with the official consulate stamp.
If you are working in Hobart on a current temporary or student visa, you are permitted to drive on your foreign licence as long as it is current and in English or you have an authorised translation.
Throughout Australia, vehicles drive on the left of the road, seatbelts must be worn at all times and drivers must carry their licence. For specific information on road rules in Tasmania, please refer to the Tasmanian Transport website.
