TITLES

Australians tend not to use titles such as Mister or Doctor in conversation although it is not uncommon to do so at an initial meeting. If someone greets you using your title, you should respond in the same manner.

Generally people address one another by first name regardless of their relationship or status, even when they have only known each other for a short time.

It is however very common to use titles in written communications such as newspaper articles as well as letters and emails. However, it is not common for the writer to use their own title when signing off a letter or email.

The terms "sir", "madam" and "miss" are often used as a polite way to address strangers.

While certainly a cliché, Australians do use the term "Mate" to refer to friends and colleagues, particularly amongst men.

WHAT THE LOCALS SAY
Traditionally people used to say 'We're not on first name terms.' Now it's more like: 'We're not on last name terms.' Funny how things change.
