CONVERSATION

Australians are not usually backward about being forward. It is normal to engage in direct eye contact during conversation and avoiding eye contact is treated with suspicion.

Similarly, Australians like to engage in direct conversation and are likely to make provocative comments to start a lively debate, without necessarily feeling strongly about the opinions they put forth. Australians find arguments and opinionated conversation entertaining, and humour is always the best way to counter any conflict. Socially, conversation can be a game for Australians, particularly men, and when "spinning a yarn" Australians tend not to let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Being a generally egalitarian and secular society Australians are comfortable with open discussions of subjects, particularly sport, politics, sex and religion.

Cynicism and humour are common traits that can be disarming to people from some cultures. Also, Australians do tend to swear a lot. If an Australian offends you with their conversation, it is best to let them know as it is unlikely they meant to do so.

While they are quite happy to ridicule themselves and Australian society, it's not always wise for foreigners to join in on these jokes. It's best to smile politely and let them get on with it.
